Illinois still has nationwide PPO coverage available, while much of downstate offers only PPOs through the marketplace. Here's what plumbers in the farming communities near Champaign should consider when picking a plan.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I specialize in health insurance, I'm licensed in Illinois, and we can handle everything over the phone. That makes life easier when you're twenty miles outside town working on a farm.
Picture a plumber based in Tolono with a two-truck operation serving Champaign County. His schedule is split between city jobs and rural calls. Around town, he's replacing water heaters, clearing sewer lines and remodeling rental properties near campus. Outside town, he's fixing farmhouse plumbing, working on wells and repairing pipes frozen by an Illinois prairie winter. The phone keeps ringing throughout the year, although his earnings change with the weather. When he checks Get Covered Illinois for family coverage, he discovers something unusual: every available medical plan is a PPO, with no other plan type offered.
One thing doesn't change: nationwide PPO coverage is still available in Illinois, and I can arrange it if the numbers make it your better option.
The marketplace works differently across downstate Illinois. Of the state's 102 counties, 56 offer individual medical coverage exclusively through PPOs from one insurer for 2026. That includes Champaign, Piatt, Douglas, Vermilion, Coles, McLean and Ford. The Champaign and Bloomington rating areas each have 10 PPO rates filed for 2026, with no other plan types listed. So finding a PPO isn't the challenge. You're deciding whether the Get Covered Illinois PPO or a privately purchased nationwide PPO works better for your family. Both allow you to visit doctors outside the network without referrals, although you'll pay more for that care.
For a plumbing business owner, the premium tax credit depends on estimated household income during the year you're getting coverage. Your self-employment income is the shop's net profit after expenses such as trucks, pipes, fittings, fixtures, the jetter, licensing, bonding and insurance. Start with your best estimate, then revise it as business changes throughout the year.
According to Get Covered Illinois, open enrollment begins November 1 and ends January 15. Since frozen-pipe emergencies can take over your schedule during that stretch, I'd suggest setting aside some time early in November to handle coverage.
In downstate Illinois, the marketplace makes this fairly straightforward. Your tax credit applies to a PPO, which is already the type of coverage many families prefer. What matters is checking whether your Champaign or Urbana doctors and hospital participate, then selecting a metal level that matches your family's expected medical care. And if business brings in more than you estimated, revise your income so your credit reflects the change.
Next step: Give me your previous year's tax return and the doctors you see. I'll work out what the downstate marketplace PPOs cost after your credit.
Without a tax credit, you're looking at the full premiums offered by one marketplace insurer. If everyone in your household is healthy, I'd also check a nationwide PPO that uses medical underwriting. The company reviews your health history before deciding whether to approve coverage, approve it with one existing condition excluded, or reject the application. A favorable medical history may bring the premium below the marketplace's unsubsidized price. Its nationwide network can also help when you're visiting relatives in Indianapolis or spending a winter week somewhere warmer. Every policy has its own benefits, and I'll review those with you before you choose.
Next step: Give me a call with your county and the ages of everyone needing coverage. I'll put a nationwide PPO price alongside the Get Covered Illinois quote.
When business slows down, a rural plumbing shop can finish the year with very little profit. Because Illinois expanded Medicaid, adults earning no more than 138% of the federal poverty level may qualify. And remember, workers' comp for a helper, if you have it, pays for work-related injuries rather than illnesses.
Next step: Call me if this is your situation, and we'll choose suitable coverage.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.
No, not in 2026. One insurer provides all the individual medical coverage there, and every plan is a PPO.
56 out of 102, mainly downstate, including Champaign, Vermilion, Coles and McLean.
The open enrollment window published by Get Covered Illinois runs November 1 through January 15.
For households qualifying for the credit, the marketplace is generally the better buy. If your income puts you beyond that range, price a health-underwritten nationwide PPO alongside it.
Tell me your county, everyone who needs coverage, and last year's net shop income. I'll calculate the downstate marketplace PPO price after your credit, put a nationwide PPO quote alongside it, and give you a straightforward recommendation.
