Arkansas plumbers still have access to nationwide PPO insurance. If you're running service calls around Little Rock, one phone conversation can help settle the coverage question. Here's how Central Arkansas shop owners can choose.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I'm licensed to sell health insurance in Arkansas, and we can do everything by phone when you have a break between plumbing appointments.
Picture a North Little Rock native who now operates a two-truck plumbing business serving Pulaski County, with additional jobs in Faulkner and Saline. Older neighborhoods such as the Quapaw Quarter, Hillcrest and the Heights keep him occupied with deteriorating cast-iron drains and sewer lines invaded by tree roots. New construction fills the remaining schedule, taking him to Conway, Benton and Bryant for plumbing installations. The business has treated him well since he moved away from a larger employer. Along with running the trucks and scheduling the jobs, he's taken care of purchasing his family's health insurance every fall, rather than receiving coverage through that former shop.
Here's the simple answer: nationwide PPO insurance is available in Arkansas, and I can help you arrange it.
Arkansas keeps its marketplace plan selection consistent throughout the state. All 75 counties have the same 52 medical options for 2026, including 28 PPOs offered by 2 insurers and 24 POS plans. The silver PPO price is particularly competitive. For a 40-year-old paying without a subsidy, the lowest-priced PPO costs only 3% more than the lowest-priced POS policy, whether you're in Little Rock or another Arkansas county. POS coverage generally rewards you for staying in network and requires referrals for specialists. A PPO allows specialist visits without referrals and also contributes toward out-of-network care, though you'll pay more of those costs yourself. A separate nationwide PPO option is available privately, with medical underwriting used to establish eligibility and price. So you have both marketplace and private PPO routes worth examining.
Your expected household earnings for the coverage year determine the premium tax credit. If you own the plumbing shop, count net self-employment profit after expenses for trucks, pipes, fittings, fixtures, cameras, jetters, licenses and insurance. Estimate that amount carefully and update the marketplace if it changes.
For 2027, HealthCare.gov enrollment runs November 1 through January 15. Want insurance effective January 1? Your application needs to be completed by December 15. I'd reserve some time early in November.
When you qualify for a premium credit, use HealthCare.gov, since private plans can't apply it. I'd generally start by pricing Arkansas's marketplace PPO. Its premium is only about 3% higher than the POS alternative before credits, and that difference buys some out-of-network coverage along with access to specialists without referrals. Still, the POS might make better financial sense if all your family's doctors already participate in its network and you're comfortable getting referrals. We'll weigh that smaller premium against the PPO's additional flexibility before choosing.
Even when business slows considerably, Arkansas offers another possibility. ARHOME covers eligible adults earning no more than 138% of the federal poverty level.
Next step: Bring me your last tax return and your doctors' names. I'll calculate your marketplace PPO and POS premiums after accounting for the credit.
When plumbing revenue grows through repiping projects and rough-ins on new construction, household income can move beyond the premium credit threshold. Then every HealthCare.gov policy is priced without assistance. I'd encourage healthy families in that situation to get a quote for privately underwritten nationwide PPO coverage. You'll complete medical questions, and the insurer may issue the policy, issue it while excluding a previous condition, or reject the application. Because applicants are screened, healthy households can often receive premiums below marketplace list prices. A nationwide network can also help when you're visiting family in Texas or spending time at a Missouri lake. Before making a choice, we'll examine what the plans actually cover, how their benefits work and what you'd pay.
Next step: Give me a call with your county and everyone's birth years. I'll quote a nationwide PPO and place it alongside the marketplace prices.
