Nationwide PPO insurance is still available to Alabama plumbers. If your jobs take you between Birmingham's established neighborhoods and expanding suburbs, we can sort out your coverage in one call. Here's what local plumbers should weigh.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I'm licensed to handle health insurance in Alabama, and we can take care of the entire process over the phone whenever you have time between jobs.
Imagine a Hoover plumber operating two trucks with plenty of jobs throughout greater Birmingham. He divides his schedule between established neighborhoods such as Crestwood, Homewood and Avondale, where deteriorating galvanized pipes and broken clay sewer laterals create regular service calls, and new houses around Chelsea and Pelham in Shelby County, where he handles rough-in plumbing. His business has stayed busy since he left a larger plumbing company years ago. That move also meant taking responsibility for choosing and paying for his own family's medical coverage, rather than relying on the former shop's plan.
I want to make this clear right away. Alabama still has nationwide PPO coverage available, and I can help you get it.
Birmingham is where Alabama's otherwise modest PPO price difference reaches its highest point. The state's 2026 marketplace offers no HMOs. In both Jefferson and Shelby counties, 4 insurers offer 44 EPOs and 10 PPOs. For a 40-year-old buying silver coverage without premium assistance, the lowest-priced PPO costs 9% more than the lowest-priced EPO. Surrounding Birmingham counties share that statewide high, while Alabama's median difference is just 3%, relatively small compared with most states. The network rules matter too. An EPO generally won't pay for nonemergency care outside its network. A PPO can contribute toward those visits, although your share may be higher. You can also purchase nationwide PPO coverage privately, with pricing determined through medical underwriting.
I'd begin with your projected household income because that's what determines your premium tax credit. As a plumbing business owner, use net self-employment earnings after expenses such as trucks, piping, fittings, fixtures, camera and jetter equipment, licenses and insurance. Make a reasonable estimate and revise it as needed.
Next, mark your enrollment dates. HealthCare.gov takes applications for 2027 from November 1 through January 15. To start insurance January 1, submit everything by December 15. I'd set aside time during a quieter stretch in early November.
If you qualify for the premium credit, start with HealthCare.gov because that's where you can use it. Your county has 44 EPO choices, so I'd first check which ones include your family's physicians and preferred hospital. You may find a good match without paying extra. If those networks don't fit, or you want coverage beyond the network, consider the PPO. Its premium is 9% higher before credits, a difference worth evaluating against the added flexibility.
Be especially careful estimating income after a very slow year. Alabama hasn't expanded Medicaid, so working adults have limited backup coverage. Marketplace tax credits also generally require income of at least 100% of the federal poverty level.
Next step: Send me your previous year's tax return and the doctors you visit. I'll calculate what Birmingham-area PPO and EPO plans cost after your premium credit.
A busy stretch of repiping work and new-home construction can raise your family's earnings beyond the marketplace credit limit. Once that happens, every HealthCare.gov plan carries its full premium. That's when I'd also price a private nationwide PPO for a healthy household. The insurer asks about each applicant's medical background before deciding whether to approve coverage. Some applicants receive approval with a previous condition excluded, while others are declined. Healthy families can often qualify for prices below unsubsidized marketplace coverage. The nationwide network also gives you access while visiting relatives in Atlanta or taking a fishing trip along the Gulf. Before you decide, I'll explain the benefits and what the plan actually pays for, so you're comparing more than premiums.
Next step: Call with your county and the people needing coverage. I'll price a nationwide PPO and show you how it stacks up against Birmingham marketplace insurance.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.
They do. In 2026, both Jefferson and Shelby offer 10 marketplace PPOs, along with 44 EPO choices apiece.
The difference is 9% before subsidies, comparing the least costly silver PPO with the least costly silver EPO for someone age 40.
HealthCare.gov enrollment lasts from November 1 through January 15. Apply no later than December 15 to begin coverage January 1.
Generally, no. Alabama hasn't expanded Medicaid, which limits eligibility.
Give me your county, everyone who needs insurance and what your plumbing business earned in profit last year. I'll price the Birmingham marketplace EPOs and PPO alongside nationwide PPO coverage, then tell you which I'd choose.
