I can help you get a nationwide PPO in Oklahoma, and Tulsa County also offers marketplace PPOs priced slightly below its HMOs. Let's compare coverage for energy and field contractors who spend a lot of time working away from home.
Hi, I'm Sam. I'm licensed to broker health insurance in 36 states, helping 1099 contractors find plans suited to their work. If you're based in Oklahoma, we can arrange everything over the phone.
Think of a drilling and completions consultant based in Broken Arrow, near Tulsa. His 1099 contracts send him out for rotations lasting two or three weeks, sometimes to the Permian Basin in West Texas, sometimes to North Dakota's Bakken, and occasionally to the nearby SCOOP play. He spends the breaks with his family in Tulsa County and sees a physician in south Tulsa. When he's working, the nearest clinic may be in a town he'd never visited before accepting the contract. Since he provides his own insurance, he enrolls through HealthCare.gov.
For 2026, Tulsa County residents have 98 individual medical plans from seven insurers to consider. There are 56 PPOs and 42 HMOs. Unlike markets where PPO coverage costs substantially more, Tulsa's least expensive silver PPO is actually 2% below its least expensive silver HMO for a 40-year-old before subsidies.
I can also help you apply for a private nationwide PPO in Oklahoma. The insurer uses your health information for underwriting, and the provider network is intended to include clinics in places such as Midland and Williston. If you work on rotations, compare that network access with what the marketplace PPO provides.
HMOs generally won't pay for nonemergency care outside their networks. So if you develop a sinus infection nine days into a Texas assignment, you could be paying yourself. A PPO can cover out-of-network visits, although your share is higher. A private nationwide PPO may include that same clinic in its network. The value depends largely on how much of your year you spend traveling.
For HealthCare.gov, calculate your projected self-employment profit over the coverage year. Start with your day-rate earnings, then subtract expenses like your vehicle, fuel, unreimbursed lodging, protective equipment, tools and insurance. Because rotation schedules change, update your estimate when major contracts begin or end.
Oklahoma expanded Medicaid after voters approved State Question 802. SoonerCare has covered adults ages 19 to 64 earning up to 138% of the poverty level since July 1, 2021. For expansion adults, work requirements begin affecting coverage January 1, 2027. Generally, you can't claim marketplace premium credits for months when you're eligible for SoonerCare.
HealthCare.gov is the only place your premium credit applies. The credit is calculated from a benchmark silver plan and stays fixed, so a lower-priced policy gives you more value from it. In Tulsa County, that lowest-priced choice is a PPO. If your contracts keep you out of state for weeks, I'd start by comparing credit-supported marketplace PPOs and checking how they cover treatment wherever you're working.
Next step: Send me your usual rotation locations and estimated net income. I'll calculate the Tulsa County PPO premiums after applying your credit.
If your earnings put you beyond premium-credit eligibility, let's compare a full-price marketplace PPO with a private nationwide PPO. Private underwriting reviews your medical information and may approve you, exclude one named condition, or decline the application. Healthy workers often see lower premiums than the unsubsidized marketplace rate. Having Midland or Williston providers in network can also matter. We'll review each policy's benefits before you enroll.
Next step: Call me and I'll compare a nationwide PPO quote against the full-price PPO options offered in Tulsa County.
Falling prices and canceled rotations can quickly reduce your annual earnings. If your projected income reaches 138% of the poverty level or below, SoonerCare might be appropriate, with work requirements beginning in 2027. When contracts resume, update your income through HealthCare.gov and transition to a marketplace policy.
Next step: If you're going through a slow period, reach out before switching plans. We'll review your expected income for the year.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.

Generally no, unless you're receiving emergency treatment or the clinic participates in your plan's network.
You may qualify with earnings no higher than 138% of the federal poverty level. Work requirements begin affecting coverage January 1, 2027.
Yes. If you're in good health, I can arrange a private nationwide PPO.
Give me your home county, your expected weeks working outside Oklahoma and your 1099 profit after expenses. I'll show you actual prices and recommend a coverage direction.
