I can still arrange a nationwide PPO in Delaware. Here's how a Wilmington compliance consultant with uneven contract earnings can choose new 2027 coverage while avoiding an unexpected tax bill.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I hold health insurance broker licenses in 36 states and work with plenty of 1099 professionals. If you're in Delaware, we can take care of your coverage by phone.
Picture a contractor who spent years handling compliance for a bank along Wilmington's riverfront. She's now consulting for banks and corporate-services firms near Rodney Square and along Route 202, doing anti-money-laundering reviews, rewriting policies and preparing for exams. Her projects last three to nine months, sometimes running together and sometimes leaving her without work between contracts. Last fall, she enrolled in the lowest-priced silver EPO on HealthCare.gov. Now she's facing two issues: her insurer is leaving the marketplace next year, and she underestimated this year's income.
For 2026, Delaware has the same marketplace selection statewide: three insurers offering 40 individual medical plans. One provides 17 EPOs, another 15 PPOs, and the third 8 HMOs. Comparing each category's lowest-priced silver option for a 40-year-old without credits, the EPO costs the least, followed by the HMO. The PPO is highest, priced 6% above the HMO and 18% above the EPO.
I can also help Delaware residents obtain a privately underwritten nationwide PPO. If consulting assignments take you to Charlotte, Philadelphia or New York, the provider network can travel with you.
According to the Delaware Department of Insurance's 2027 rate announcement, two marketplace insurers received approved average increases of 17.20% and 13.94%. The insurer that offered every EPO in 2026 isn't on that list. So if you currently have one of those EPO plans, open enrollment means comparing the remaining HMO and PPO companies. Both have higher advertised premiums than last year.
With an HMO or EPO, coverage generally stays inside the provider network except for emergencies. PPOs also cover out-of-network providers, although you'll pay more to use them.
Correcting your estimate is the priority. HealthCare.gov requires updated income projections when your circumstances change. If you've received more advance credit than your actual income permits, the difference gets reconciled when you file taxes. For tax years after 2025, repayment has no limit. Increase your estimate through your account now so the remaining monthly premiums reflect it.
Once your updated income exceeds four times the poverty level, you lose the credit altogether. That's when I'd compare unsubsidized marketplace coverage with a private nationwide PPO. Underwriting considers your medical history and may approve you, exclude one condition, or reject the application. Healthy consultants often find lower premiums privately. Before making a choice, we'll compare each plan's benefits, not just its price.
Next step: Share your contract earnings to date and any signed work through December. I'll help you calculate a more accurate income projection.
If your reasonable 2027 income projection falls between 100% and 400% of the poverty level, credits make HealthCare.gov coverage generally more economical. Without the EPO insurer, you're comparing HMOs and PPOs. In 2026, the silver PPO cost 6% more than the silver HMO. If your Wilmington and Newark doctors participate in the HMO, that's usually the better value after credits. A Philadelphia specialist outside its network could justify paying extra for the PPO.
Next step: Give me your provider list and projected 2027 income. When the new plans become available, I'll compare credited HMO and PPO premiums.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.
The insurer providing all Delaware marketplace EPOs in 2026 is absent from the Department of Insurance's 2027 rate announcement. Prepare to select replacement coverage this fall.
You'll reconcile excess advance credits on your tax return. Beginning with tax years after 2025, there's no repayment ceiling.
For 2026 silver coverage, the EPO costs least, the HMO comes next, and the PPO runs 18% above the EPO and 6% above the HMO.
Yes. I can help healthy contractors obtain private nationwide PPO coverage outside the marketplace.
Let me know your current coverage, everyone insured under it, what your contracts have brought in this year and what you expect next. I'll compare the 2027 marketplace prices after credits with a private nationwide PPO.
