Michigan 1099 contractors

Here's how 1099 contractors in Michigan are saving money on their health insurance this year

I can help you find nationwide PPO coverage in Michigan, including areas where marketplace PPO premiums exceed twice the alternatives. Here's how West Michigan contractors serving Chicago and other distant clients can approach their insurance choices.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam. I help 1099 workers purchase their own health insurance, and I hold licenses in 36 states. Michigan contractors can work with me entirely by phone.

Consider a freelance video producer based in Kentwood, southeast of Grand Rapids. She works for a furniture manufacturer in Zeeland, a food business in Fremont and a Chicago advertising agency. That agency occasionally sends her to Nashville and Denver for shoots during the year. All her customers issue 1099s, but none provide insurance benefits. She uses her Kent County residence to shop on HealthCare.gov, where she encounters Michigan's largest marketplace PPO premium gap.

You can still get a nationwide PPO in Michigan

Kent County offers plenty of marketplace choices for 2026: 80 individual medical plans from seven insurers, including 63 HMOs, 8 EPOs and 9 PPOs. PPOs are available, but the price difference is significant. In Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties, a 40-year-old without subsidies pays 105% more for the least expensive silver PPO than for the lowest-priced silver plan of another type. That's Michigan's widest county-level difference.

A nationwide PPO in Michigan doesn't have to carry that marketplace premium. For applicants in good health, I can arrange private underwritten coverage with providers accessible in Chicago, Nashville, Denver and Michigan.

How travel changes the plan you need

HMOs and EPOs generally restrict nonemergency out-of-network coverage. PPOs continue offering benefits outside their networks, but your share of the cost rises. If you're traveling to another state for a week every month, that distinction determines whether an ordinary walk-in clinic visit receives coverage or becomes your responsibility.

When your physicians and nearly all your contracts are in West Michigan, a suitable local HMO might be enough. Frequent flights for work change the equation, making network access a priority.

Getting the income number right

HealthCare.gov calculates eligibility from projected net self-employment income during the coverage year. Deduct camera equipment, editing programs, unreimbursed travel, home studio expenses and other legitimate costs from your 1099 revenue. Revise your estimate promptly when you gain or lose a major client. For tax years after 2025, excess tax credits must be repaid without a repayment cap.

Scenario 1 of 3

My net puts me in the credit range

With a tax credit, HealthCare.gov generally provides your lowest-cost coverage because those credits apply only to marketplace plans. For Kent County, I'd compare HMO and EPO networks with your doctors first. The marketplace PPO costs more than twice as much, and the credit doesn't increase to offset that premium. A doctor you must keep who participates only in the PPO network could change that calculation.

Scenario 2 of 3

I earn past the credit range and I'm healthy

Without subsidies, Grand Rapids contractors face local HMOs or marketplace PPOs costing more than double. Private coverage offers another route. You'll complete medical questions, after which the insurer can accept your application, deny it or approve it while excluding a specified condition. Healthy people often qualify below full marketplace premiums. Since benefits vary between policies, we'll examine them carefully together.

Scenario 3 of 3

I lost my biggest client

When a major customer disappears, your projected earnings might drop by half. At 138% of the poverty level or below, the Healthy Michigan Plan could provide coverage, and Medicaid eligibility generally eliminates marketplace tax credits for those same months. There's also an upcoming federal work or community-engagement requirement affecting many expansion adults by January 1, 2027. Once new projects increase your income, report the change to the marketplace and transition back to one of its plans.
