I can help you get a nationwide PPO in Montana as well. Since most marketplace plans in Gallatin County are already PPOs, let's look at how Bozeman agents figure out which one makes the most sense for their year.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber, and I hold health insurance broker licenses in 36 states. If you're a Montana real estate agent, we can take care of your coverage together over the phone.
Picture a real estate agent living in Belgrade and working throughout the Gallatin Valley. One week she's showing new builds in Four Corners, another she's selling older properties around Montana State, smaller ranch properties toward Manhattan, or a ski condo in Big Sky. Many clients are moving in from California, Washington and Colorado, often with remote jobs. Most of her closings happen during spring and summer, while winter brings a serious slowdown. Her brokerage only pays commissions when transactions close, leaving her to purchase health insurance through HealthCare.gov. Agents arriving from other states are often surprised to discover that most of her available plans are PPOs.
For 2026, Gallatin County has 39 individual medical plans offered by three insurers. The breakdown is 22 PPOs, 9 POS plans and 8 EPOs. PPO coverage comes with a relatively small price difference here. For a 40-year-old paying without a subsidy, the lowest-priced silver PPO costs 9% more than the lowest-priced silver plan in another category.
I can also arrange a private nationwide PPO for you in Montana. It's medically underwritten and gives you access to in-network doctors far outside Montana. For someone in Bozeman, having a PPO isn't really the question. What matters is whether the marketplace version or a private PPO works better with your health and income.
Your household income for the year you're getting coverage determines whether you receive premium assistance, and that assistance ends once income exceeds four times the federal poverty level. For real estate agents, we're looking at commissions after subtracting the brokerage split, MLS and professional dues, advertising, listing photos, and all that driving from Big Sky to Three Forks.
Montana's full premiums increased this year. According to KFF, the benchmark silver premium for a 40-year-old went up 24.9% between 2025 and 2026. The state also operates a reinsurance program, with CMS having extended its waiver through the 2029 plan year.
Once your income puts you beyond premium credit eligibility, you're responsible for the entire premium, and this year's increases make that expensive. That's when I'd put a private nationwide PPO beside the marketplace PPO. The private company evaluates your medical history before deciding whether to approve you, approve coverage with one condition excluded, or decline the application. Agents in good health often find premiums below the marketplace's full price. Before making a decision, we'll review what each policy actually covers.
Next step: Give me a call and I'll compare the price of a nationwide PPO with the unsubsidized PPO options available in Gallatin County.
Suppose business slows down and your annual income approaches 138% of the poverty level. Montana's Medicaid expansion could become an option. However, starting July 1, 2026, most adults ages 19 to 64 covered through expansion have to document 80 hours of qualifying activity each month, so review those requirements before counting on it. Once spring brings more closings, report your updated income and transition back to marketplace coverage. Track pending transactions together so updating your spring estimate only takes a few minutes, and have that information ready when we talk.
Next step: When commissions are down for the year, give me a call before renewal so we can see which coverage category your income puts you in.
