Wisconsin drivers can still buy a nationwide PPO. That's especially useful when you're hauling through dairy country along I-94, because your home county has no marketplace PPO available. Here's how owner-operators around the Chippewa Valley can arrange coverage.
Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I focus entirely on health insurance and I'm licensed in Wisconsin. Truckers generally reach me by phone when they're stopped at a loading dock or waiting to get through a scale.
Imagine a truck owner living just outside Eau Claire, surrounded by dairy farms. He spends part of his time moving cheese and milk from farms to processing plants and warehouses throughout the Chippewa Valley. Other loads send him east along I-94 through Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago, or west past the Twin Cities toward the Dakotas. Occasionally, he heads south on I-90 or takes I-43 beside the lake. Winter weather brings snow and strong winds, sometimes leaving him stranded away from home for a couple of days. His family visits doctors in Eau Claire, but when he needs medical attention himself, it depends on where he's parked the truck.
Here's what I'd want that trucker to know first: Wisconsin still has nationwide PPO coverage available, and I can help him arrange a plan.
Looking on HealthCare.gov won't turn up a PPO in Eau Claire County. For 2026, its marketplace lists 18 EPOs, 7 HMOs and 9 POS plans, but not a single medical PPO. Across Wisconsin, marketplace PPOs are available in only 15 of the state's 72 counties. With an HMO or EPO, care outside the network generally gets paid only for emergencies. That means a Fargo clinic treating your bad chest cold probably won't be covered. A PPO, however, contributes toward out-of-network treatment without a referral, although your share is higher. Nationwide PPO coverage is available privately, with premiums determined after the insurer reviews your health.
What you earn as a household during the coverage year determines your premium tax credit. When the truck belongs to you, HealthCare.gov looks at your net self-employment earnings. Start with your settlements and subtract fuel, truck payments, tires, repairs, plates, permits and insurance on the rig. Use that figure to estimate your income at enrollment, then update it when a slow season, mechanical failure or changing freight rates affects your annual earnings.
Once your household earns beyond the credit limit, every HealthCare.gov option comes at full price. And in Eau Claire County, none of those options is a PPO. That's when I'd compare a private nationwide PPO that uses medical underwriting. The insurer reviews your answers to health questions and either approves you, approves coverage excluding a previous condition, or declines the application. A driver in good health can often pay less than the marketplace's full premium. The network also treats a walk-in clinic in North Dakota or Illinois the same way it treats one in Eau Claire. We'll make sure the doctors your family uses back home are included as well.
Next step: Let me know which routes you drive and everyone who needs insurance. I'll show you what a nationwide PPO costs alongside the marketplace plans offered in Eau Claire County.
If you're mainly hauling between farms and plants in the Chippewa Valley, you're probably sleeping at home most nights. Add a household income that qualifies for the credit, and HealthCare.gov is generally your better deal because that's the only place to use it. We can select an EPO, POS or HMO that includes your family's usual doctors. Schedule ordinary visits when you're home, and keep in mind that emergency treatment is covered regardless of which highway you're traveling.
Next step: Have your previous year's tax return and some recent load sheets handy. With a single phone conversation, I can help estimate your income and find a Chippewa Valley health plan.
A stretch without loads or an engine failure can bring household earnings way down. Wisconsin provides more help in that situation than many states that didn't expand coverage under the ACA. Through BadgerCare Plus, adults with or without children can qualify at incomes up to 100% of the federal poverty level. Marketplace credits generally begin at that point, avoiding the gap found in other states without expansion. Just remember that occupational accident insurance is for work-related injuries. It doesn't cover getting sick.
Next step: Does that describe your year? Call me and we'll choose health coverage that works for you.
Straight answers, no sales pitch.
No. Eau Claire County has marketplace EPO, POS and HMO plans for 2026, but no medical PPO. Healthy truckers can still apply for a private nationwide PPO.
Most of the time, coverage applies only to emergencies, unless the clinic or physician participates in that plan's network.
No. At 100% of the federal poverty level, BadgerCare Plus meets the marketplace credit, giving lower-income truckers a coverage route.
Not necessarily. Drivers staying local or regional who qualify for the credit may do better with an Eau Claire County HMO or EPO.
Tell me which county you live in, how often you're away trucking each month, who needs insurance and what the truck earned after expenses last year. I'll compare plans for the roads you travel and tell you plainly which coverage I recommend.
