Here's how travel nurses in Montana are saving money on their health insurance this year

I can help you get a nationwide PPO in Montana, although Flathead County already offers plenty of PPO choices on its marketplace. If you live near Glacier and travel for nursing contracts, here's how to compare the PPO options available to you.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam Jaber. I'm licensed in 36 states, and I help travel nurses maintain their own health coverage as they move between contracts. We take care of the whole process by phone.

Picture a nurse who settled in Whitefish because she loves skiing. After three winters working in a Kalispell ICU, she began accepting travel nursing assignments to support that lifestyle. She still keeps her small home near Whitefish Lake and returns there whenever she's between contracts. This year has taken her to Seattle and Albuquerque, with Raleigh scheduled for September. The problem is that her agency insurance ends each time an assignment finishes. When she checks the federal marketplace using her Flathead County address, she discovers something useful: PPOs make up more than half of the available plans.

You can still get a nationwide PPO in Montana

Flathead County has 39 marketplace medical plans available for 2026 through three insurers. That includes 22 PPOs, 9 POS plans, and 8 EPOs. The PPO price difference is fairly small. At age 40, before subsidies, the lowest-priced silver PPO costs 9% more than the most affordable silver POS plan.

I can also help you purchase a private nationwide PPO outside Montana's marketplace. Approval and pricing depend on your health, and the provider network is structured to include in-network care in places such as Seattle and Raleigh. For someone based in Flathead County, we're really comparing two different ways of getting PPO coverage.

Plan the year first

Marketplace assistance is based on your household's income for the entire year, and eligibility ends above four times the federal poverty level. Your contracts, stipends, time off, and local per diem work all affect that amount. Use signed assignments to build your estimate, then update the numbers as additional contracts are confirmed.

Montana has expanded Medicaid, with KFF reporting adult eligibility up to 138% of the poverty level. On July 1, 2026, Montana started requiring most expansion adults between ages 19 and 64 to verify 80 hours of qualifying monthly activity. That's important to understand if you're considering an extended break from travel nursing assignments.

Scenario 1 of 3

The assignment is over and so is the agency plan

Losing coverage through your nursing job starts a 60-day period to enroll in a marketplace plan. COBRA offers another way to continue the agency insurance. But if you voluntarily cancel COBRA afterward or stop paying for it, you won't get another enrollment period just because it ended. Think through that before submitting your COBRA election.

A lot of travel nurses avoid that repeated coverage cycle by maintaining their own insurance throughout the year.

Scenario 2 of 3

This year's income gets me the credit

Marketplace credits apply only to marketplace plans, with the amount calculated against a benchmark silver plan. When you choose something more expensive, you cover the difference, which is around 9% for Flathead County's PPO. An EPO normally covers out-of-network care only for emergencies. A PPO can contribute toward other out-of-network services, although you pay a larger portion. For nurses spending most of the year away, that additional 9% can be money well spent. A marketplace PPO may be a solid choice, provided we check its out-of-network benefits in the states where you'll work.

Scenario 3 of 3

Too much income for the credit, and nothing wrong with my health

When you don't qualify for a marketplace credit, compare the unsubsidized PPO premium with a private nationwide PPO quote. Private coverage requires medical questions, after which the insurer may approve you, approve you while excluding a specified condition, or decline. Nurses in good health often pay less than full marketplace premiums while getting in-network access in their assignment locations. Coverage details differ, so we'll review the benefits together before making a decision.
