Here's how real estate investors in Wyoming are saving money on their health insurance this year

I can arrange nationwide PPO coverage in Wyoming. Here's how a Converse County household earning money from grazing leases, mineral royalties and rental homes can choose insurance despite unpredictable oil-related income.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam Jaber, licensed to broker health insurance in Wyoming plus 35 other states. I help Wyoming investors and landowners purchase coverage over the phone.

Consider a couple in their early sixties living near Douglas. They no longer raise cattle themselves, having leased their grazing land to a neighbor several years ago. Oil and gas wells beneath part of the property generate mineral royalties, and they also own three rental houses in Douglas. Rent and lease payments remain fairly steady, but royalty checks fluctuate with drilling activity and oil prices. Their local hospital is in Douglas, with a larger facility in Casper, and one spouse sees a Denver cardiologist. Each fall, they need to estimate which income figures to provide to the marketplace.

You can still get a nationwide PPO in Wyoming

For 2026, Converse County residents have 23 individual medical plans available through the marketplace. One company provides all 11 PPOs, while another provides the 12 EPOs. Choosing between PPO and EPO therefore also determines your insurer. For an unsubsidized 40-year-old buying silver coverage, the lowest-priced PPO is 2% cheaper than the EPO.

Wyoming residents can also obtain a private nationwide PPO through me, subject to medical underwriting. For spouses in their sixties, I'd examine the alternatives closely and give you a straightforward assessment.

Leases, royalties and rent, counted the marketplace way

HealthCare.gov uses rental and royalty income after eligible expenses. That includes fencing and water expenses for leased grazing land, costs associated with royalties, and rental-property repairs, insurance and depreciation. These amounts contribute to modified adjusted gross income. Marketplace credits generally apply between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.

Your ages also affect premiums. Federal rules allow adult pricing differences up to a 3-to-1 ratio, putting buyers in their sixties near the higher end. Wyoming's average benchmark silver premium for a 40-year-old increased 25.1% between 2025 and 2026, according to KFF. That makes premium credits especially valuable for older households.

Scenario 1 of 2

Oil prices dipped and we're inside the credit range

When royalty payments fall, your household might qualify for a credit that substantially lowers premiums at your age. After applying that credit, Converse County's silver PPO is usually attractive. It costs a little less than the EPO and contributes toward out-of-network services, although you'll pay a larger portion. An EPO generally won't cover non-network treatment except for emergencies.

Your Denver cardiologist makes that network difference important. Before enrolling, confirm whether the PPO insurer includes that physician. Repeated appointments outside the network can become expensive even when the policy contributes toward them.

Scenario 2 of 2

The wells paid well this year

A run of strong royalty payments could put your annual income above four times the poverty level. If you received advance credits based on a lower projection, the difference is reconciled at tax filing. Starting in tax year 2026, the full excess is repayable without a cap. Update HealthCare.gov when your royalty statements show where income is heading.

If your projected income exceeds that limit and both of you are healthy, compare the full Converse County marketplace premium against a private nationwide PPO. Medical underwriting may result in approval, approval excluding one condition or rejection. Healthy couples often receive private rates below unsubsidized marketplace prices. I'll explain each policy's benefits so you can choose confidently.

Questions real estate investors ask me

Straight answers, no sales pitch.

Do mineral royalties count as income for the Wyoming marketplace credit?

Yes. HealthCare.gov includes rental and royalty profits after subtracting the expenses tied to earning that income.

Is the PPO or the EPO less expensive near Douglas?

The PPO is less expensive. Converse County's lowest-priced silver PPO comes in 2% below its lowest-priced silver EPO.

What happens if my royalties come in higher than I estimated?

Advance premium credits are settled when you file your taxes. For years after 2025, you must return the entire amount of any excess credit.

Can a Wyoming land or mineral investor get a nationwide PPO?

Healthy applicants may qualify. I'll compare a private nationwide PPO quote against the Converse County options for both of you.

What did the royalty checks look like this year?

Let me know your location, both ages, last year's net lease and royalty income, and any property you're considering selling. I'll compare private and marketplace prices for the year.
