Here's how electricians in Michigan are saving money on their health insurance this year

You can still buy nationwide PPO coverage in Michigan, even though the marketplace PPO carries a premium roughly half again as high as competing plans. Here's how electricians around metro Detroit can approach that decision.

Sam Jaber, licensed health insurance broker

Hi, I'm Sam. Health insurance is my business, Michigan is among the 36 states where I'm licensed, and I work with clients entirely by phone. Calling from the parking lot outside a plant is perfectly fine.

This page is for someone running a small electrical business out of Sterling Heights. You're a master electrician, and your schedule changes constantly. One week you're installing conduit and cable for production line upgrades at automotive plants in Warren or Sterling Heights. Another week you're handling basement wiring and electrical service improvements around Oakland and Macomb. Plant contracts can pay well, but the work comes in waves around model changeovers. You no longer have the union or employer health plan you once relied on, so covering that expense is now your responsibility.

You can still get a nationwide PPO in Michigan

No matter what price HealthCare.gov shows you, I can help you explore nationwide PPO coverage in Michigan.

PPOs do appear on HealthCare.gov in metro Detroit. For 2026, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties each list 55 HMOs and 9 PPOs from 5 insurers, with every PPO supplied by the same insurer. Comparing unsubsidized silver plans for a 40-year-old within each county, the lowest-priced PPO exceeds the lowest-priced HMO by 52% in Macomb and Oakland and 51% in Wayne. HMOs generally restrict out-of-network coverage to emergencies. PPOs can pay toward other outside providers at a higher cost to you and don't require referrals. Private medically underwritten plans offer nationwide PPO networks with premiums determined by your health.

What decides your path

The first thing I'd check is household income. When you qualify for federal premium tax credits, HealthCare.gov will generally be more affordable. Once earnings exceed the credit range, marketplace premiums are unsubsidized, making other options worth comparing.

For insurance purposes, focus on the business's expected profit during the coverage year. That's net self-employment income after expenses such as wiring, supplies, your vehicle, tools, permits, licensing and liability insurance. You'll estimate it when enrolling and revise it when circumstances change. Automotive plant projects make forecasting difficult because six weeks of changeover work might produce an entire quarter's earnings.

Scenario 1 of 3

Plant work has been steady and we're healthy

When retooling projects stay busy and household earnings exceed the premium tax credit range, paying 52% more for a marketplace PPO is a significant expense. A healthy household should compare medically underwritten nationwide PPO coverage. The insurer uses your medical questionnaire to decide whether to accept, deny or approve coverage excluding one previous condition. Healthy applicants may pay less than the marketplace's unsubsidized premium. The network also extends outside Michigan, useful when work takes you to Indiana or Ohio for a week. Since benefits vary, we'll examine what each plan covers.

Scenario 2 of 3

Between plant jobs, we qualify for the credit

During a slower year with fewer plant changeovers, you may qualify for premium tax credits. That generally makes HealthCare.gov the better-priced choice because those credits only work there. Your county has 55 HMOs, giving you plenty of networks to check against your family's doctors. If earnings fall further, Michigan's Medicaid expansion, the Healthy Michigan Plan, covers qualifying adults up to 138% of the federal poverty level. Update your income estimate when another plant contract comes through.

Scenario 3 of 3

I'm leaving a contractor's payroll to run my own shop

When your employer health plan ends, you may qualify to enroll through HealthCare.gov outside the regular fall enrollment season. Voluntarily cancelling COBRA early doesn't create that opportunity, so don't terminate it expecting to qualify. If you're healthy and considering medically underwritten coverage, submit the application several weeks before leaving because approval takes time. Workers' compensation only covers work-related injuries, not sickness.

Where the Michigan figures come from

  • Michigan's individual marketplace runs on HealthCare.gov; Michigan is one of the states in the federal 2026 QHP Landscape file Source
  • For 2026, Macomb, Oakland and Wayne each have 55 marketplace HMOs and 9 PPOs from 5 insurers; across Michigan, one insurer offers the marketplace PPO Source
  • Matched within each county (silver plans, age 40, before any subsidy), the lowest-priced marketplace PPO costs 52% more than the lowest-priced plan of any other network type in Macomb and Oakland, and 51% more in Wayne Source
  • HMO plans generally don't cover care outside their network except in an emergency, and PPO plans cover out-of-network care at a higher cost without a referral Source
  • Self-employed people report net self-employment income to the marketplace, estimate it for the coverage year, and should update it as soon as it changes Source
  • Losing health coverage through your employer can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period on HealthCare.gov; voluntarily dropping COBRA does not Source
  • Michigan has adopted the Medicaid expansion (the Healthy Michigan Plan); adults qualify with income up to 138% of the federal poverty level Source
